Where to stay in Izu: Higashiizu onsen towns
Stay in Atagawa for a first trip to Higashiizu’s east coast: the tropical garden is beside the station, with a sandy shore and sea-facing hotels downhill. This stretch of the Izu Peninsula also has Inatori’s fishing port and quieter bath stays in Okawa and Hokkawa; the hillside approaches can be steep.
Coastal towns
| Area | Reason to stay | Rail and arrival | Setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atagawa | Garden, sand and sea-facing hotels | Izu-Atagawa; direct Odoriko services and hotel transfers | The town slopes down from the railway |
| Inatori | Fishing-port streets and hanging decorations | Izu-Inatori; two local stops to Kawazu | Seafront inns beyond the port |
| Okawa | Private-bath inn above Sagami Bay | Izu-Okawa, then a walk or arranged pickup | Isaribi’s approach is narrow and steep |
| Hokkawa | Small rocky-shore ryokan village | Local train to Izu-Hokkawa, or hotel pickup from Atagawa | Inns face the water; public Kurone bath closed |
| Katase and Shirata | Smaller settlements between Atagawa and Inatori | Shared Katase-Shirata station | Two smaller settlements between the hills and sea |
Atagawa Ocean Resort has ocean-facing balcony rooms and a five-minute walk from the station. Atagawakan is a seafront ryokan with Japanese rooms looking toward Izu Oshima. In Inatori, Tokai Hotel Yuen faces the sea beyond the fishing port. Isaribi in Okawa has an open-air bath in every room.

Atagawa
Steam, tropical plants and the sea are close together in Atagawa. The garden begins beside the station; YOU Yu Beach lies down the hill among the coastal hotels. Atagawa Ocean Resort faces the Pacific, with balconies, indoor and outdoor baths, and twin, triple and Japanese-Western rooms. Walk from the station in about five minutes, or use the reserved transfer.
Atagawakan stands by the shore, with sea-view Japanese rooms and baths looking toward Izu Oshima. Above town, Atagawa Prince has a rooftop bath and indoor and outdoor pools in timber, rock and ceramic settings; the walk from the station includes steep slopes and stairs. Both are among the Atagawa ryokans where seafood dinners are served on meal plans.

Inatori
Inatori projects into the sea around its fishing port. Kinmedai and dried fish sit beside citrus in the town’s food shops, while sewn hanging decorations mark a local tradition beyond the waterfront. Kawazu is two local stations farther south, with Imaihama-Kaigan between them. Trains continue to Shimoda for a harbor-town day.
Inatori Tokai Hotel Yuen stands directly beside the sea, with ocean-view rooms, outdoor pools and a rock-enclosed cave bath; seafood kaiseki is served on dinner plans. The station is about fifteen minutes away on foot. A free minibus meets staying guests between 14:00 and 18:00 when they arrange their train arrival time. Animal Kingdom and Hosono Highlands are uphill bus or road outings from Inatori.

Okawa and Hokkawa
Isaribi stands above Sagami Bay in Okawa, with a sea view and an open-air hot-spring bath in every room. Larger indoor and outdoor baths are available privately to staying guests. The narrow, steep walk from Izu-Okawa takes about eight minutes; pickup can be arranged between 14:30 and 19:00. Stairs serve the upper floors.
In Hokkawa, ryokans face a rocky shore beneath the hills. Tsuruya Kisshotei and Kissho CAREN have stone, timber and sea-view baths. Hokkawa Onsen Hotel has sea-view Japanese rooms and reserved station transfers. Its rooftop Kuchu Yuen is closed for renovation, with reopening planned for November 1, 2026. Kurone Iwaburo, the village’s public shore bath, is also closed after storm damage; guests bathe inside the inns.
